Qualified Electrician & Electrical Services in Rock Hill, SC
Behind an Oakland Avenue Queen Anne, the meter and service wire usually belong to the city, because Rock Hill built its own electric system in the 1890s and still runs it. We work on the house side: panels, upgrades and EV chargers.

Upgrading a house on Rock Hill's own power system
Most homes inside city limits buy their electricity from the City of Rock Hill, which purchases power at wholesale from the Piedmont Municipal Power Agency and the Southeastern Power Administration and delivers it over city-owned lines. That shapes a service upgrade. The meter and the drop are city equipment, so a bigger panel means coordinating the meter work with the city utility as well as passing a city inspection, and we plan that sequence before the first breaker comes out. The routine changes a few exits up I-77, where our electrical service in Fort Mill works with Duke Energy and York Electric lines instead.
Electrical work for Rock Hill homes
Our generator work stays in North Carolina, so in Rock Hill we focus on the four jobs below. Each one is permitted through the City of Rock Hill and inspected before we call it finished.

What Rock Hill puts a home's wiring through
Rock Hill's electrical problems come from its age, its storms and an unusual utility setup. These four come up most often when we open a panel here.
Seven mills, seven villages
Seven textile mills went up in Rock Hill between 1881 and 1907, and every one of them built a mill village beside it. Some of those houses still stand around Highland Park and the old mill sites. A house that old has usually been rewired in stages, so we trace the whole run from the meter before adding a load.
A boulevard built from 1891
Oakland was platted in 1891 with about 1,300 lots, and Oakland Avenue became the town's most fashionable address as building continued until about 1930. Its Queen Anne, Classical Revival and bungalow houses now carry central air, modern kitchens and car chargers their builders never planned for.
Hugo winds and a 22-inch snow
Hurricane Hugo hit Rock Hill on the morning of September 22, 1989, with sustained winds over 90 mph. In February 2004 a storm dropped 22 inches of snow, and some areas reached 28. When weather tears a service mast off a house, the house-side repair is electrician work that has to be done before the utility reconnects.
Three utilities, one county
In January 2026 the Herald counted 40,961 customers on the city's own power service, with Duke Energy and York Electric Cooperative serving much of the surrounding area. Knowing which one serves a house tells us who owns the meter and who we coordinate with on the day of the work.

Questions from Rock Hill homeowners
Inside city limits, the City of Rock Hill Planning and Development department handles permits and inspections from City Hall on Johnston Street. Electrical service changes and most wiring alterations need a permit, and the city requires that kind of work to be done by a licensed contractor. We file the permit, book each inspection as the job progresses and keep the approved plans on site.
Call whoever sends your power bill. City of Rock Hill electric customers can report outages online or at 803-329-5500, while Duke Energy and York Electric Cooperative customers report through their own apps, text lines or phone numbers. If the outage is only in your house, or on one side of it, call us instead, because that usually points to the panel or the service equipment.
Usually, once we know what is in the panel. Much of Oakland was built between the 1890s and about 1930, and different owners have changed the service over the decades. A load calculation comes first, and it shows whether the charger fits as is, needs a load management device, or calls for a service upgrade coordinated with the city utility.
