Careful Generator & Electrical Service in Huntersville, NC

One July morning in 2025, a damaged Duke transmission line left about 4,000 homes and the Gilead Road traffic lights in Huntersville dark. We install the standby generators, panels and chargers that keep a house running through mornings like that one.

Town power, Duke or EnergyUnited: check the bill first

Depending on the street, a Huntersville home buys its electricity from the town's own system, from Duke Energy or from EnergyUnited. Since July 1, 2026 the town has run its system itself as Huntersville Electric. For a generator, the brand on the bill changes little. For a panel upgrade it matters, because the utility that owns your meter has to disconnect and reconnect the service, so we line that up before the work date. The same lake-lot questions, about dock circuits and long runs out to boathouses, come up all along I-77, and they are a big part of our generator and electrical service in Mooresville, a few exits north along Lake Norman.

Why the lights go out between two lakes

Huntersville outages have come from storms, from equipment and once from a squirrel. These four facts shape how we plan backup power and service work here.

  1. A town that took back its own grid

The town's electric system dates to 1916, and ElectriCities lists Huntersville as an NCMPA1 public power town. After an August 2025 Town Board vote, the town began running that system itself on July 1, 2026, while Duke Energy and EnergyUnited customers stayed where they were.

  2. One squirrel, 10,000 customers

On October 23, 2021, a squirrel got into EnergyUnited's Northcross substation and cut power to about 10,000 customers in Huntersville and Cornelius. Every circuit was back by early afternoon, but that Saturday showed that outages here are not only a storm problem.

  3. Storms that come in off the lake

On August 7, 2023, an EF0 tornado touched down just south of Lake Norman and moved through western Huntersville, uprooting trees and damaging a few homes. Back in September 1989, the National Weather Service said Hurricane Hugo left Mecklenburg County looking like a war zone.

  4. Young houses carrying new loads

Huntersville grew from 3,014 residents in 1990 to 61,376 in 2020, so most homes date from that stretch. Their wiring is rarely the worry. The question is whether the original panel has room for a charger, a heat pump and a generator transfer switch.

Questions from Huntersville homeowners

No. Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement handles them for Huntersville, the same county office that covers Charlotte, Cornelius and Davidson. We file with the county and schedule the inspection around your day. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check its rules on generator placement early, since that approval is separate from the county permit.

On July 1, 2026 the town took over its own electric system, and former ElectriCities customers became Huntersville Electric customers. Backup power itself is utility-neutral. Where it matters is a panel or service upgrade, because the meter owner has to cut and restore the service, and we schedule that with Huntersville Electric, Duke Energy or EnergyUnited.

The town handles distribution on its streets, but the power still reaches it over transmission lines. On July 15, 2025, damage to a Duke Energy transmission line cut service to about 4,000 ElectriCities customers between Gilead Road and Sam Furr Road. Whichever company had the fault, a standby unit starts within seconds.

Usually, but we check before quoting. Many Huntersville homes were built after 1990 and have reasonable service, yet years of added circuits can use up the headroom. We measure the panel's real headroom with a load calculation, then tell you whether both fit as is, whether load management solves it, or whether a panel upgrade is the cleaner fix.
