A young town whose first subdivisions are turning 30

In 1990, Indian Trail had 1,942 residents. By 2020 it had 39,997, and much of that growth arrived as subdivisions: Brandon Oaks, built from the mid-1990s into the mid-2000s, then Bonterra and Crismark through the 2000s and 2010s. That first wave of houses is now 20 to 30 years old. Their panels were sized for the builder's original plan, not for a Level 2 charger, a heat pump and a standby generator sharing one service. A lot of Indian Trail households also commute about 10 miles into Charlotte, and we cover both ends of that drive. If your office or a family member's house is in the city, see our generator and electrical service in Charlotte.

Where Indian Trail's power and wiring get tested

The pressures here differ from an old city's: two utilities split the town, the housing is young but aging together, and Union County storms still bring trees down on lines.

  1. Two utilities, one town

Duke Energy and Union Power Cooperative both serve Indian Trail, and which one you have depends on your address. Union Power is a member-owned cooperative based in Monroe, so after a storm your restoration may be handled by a different company than a neighbor's on Duke. Backup power at your house works the same either way.

  2. Christmas Eve 2022 on Duke lines

Winter Storm Elliott forced Duke Energy into its first rotating outages across the Carolinas on December 24, 2022, about half a million customers in all. Homes on Duke's side of Indian Trail were part of that system on one of the coldest mornings of the year.

  3. Spring storms near Porter Ridge

On March 5, 2025, a storm heavily damaged a building off Friendly Baptist Church Road in Indian Trail, and Union County Emergency Management reported power outages around Porter Ridge. Outages like that are why we wire standby generators to start on their own, with nobody home to flip a switch.

  4. Hugo hit a much smaller town

When Hurricane Hugo reached Union County in September 1989, hundreds of residents fled to shelters and Duke Power counted more than 500,000 customers without service across the Piedmont. Indian Trail had fewer than 2,000 residents then, so most homes in town today have never been through a storm of that size.

Questions from Indian Trail homeowners

Union County Building Code Enforcement, not the town. The county issues building and trade permits across Union County except in Monroe and Waxhaw, and Indian Trail's own permit forms send owners to the county for that work. We pull the county permit and book the inspection. If the job is part of an addition, the town's zoning permit comes first.

Check your electric bill. The town lists both Duke Energy and Union Power Cooperative as providers, and which one serves you depends on where you live. It matters for outage reporting (Duke at 1-800-777-9898, Union Power at 1-800-794-4423) and for meter work during a panel upgrade. Your generator setup does not change between the two.

In many Indian Trail subdivisions, yes. The town's residential permit form states that securing HOA approval is the property owner's responsibility, and that where town and HOA rules conflict, the stricter one controls. Before installation we go over placement with you, so you have the details your HOA is likely to ask for.

Not always. Homes in subdivisions like Bonterra and Crismark went up in the 2000s and 2010s, and many have the capacity for a Level 2 charger, while houses from the 1990s may have less room to spare. Before quoting, a load calculation shows whether the panel can take the charger as is, needs load management or needs an upgrade.
