Electrician working on a homeowner's electrical panel upgrade near Fort Mill, SC

200 amps, meter base included

Professional Electrical Panel Upgrade in Fort Mill, SC

Jumping from 100 amps to 200 takes more than a bigger main breaker. Duke Energy bars modifying a meter base to raise its capacity, so in much of Fort Mill, the upgrade begins outdoors with a new base on the wall.

What a 200 amp service gives a Fort Mill home

Before anything is ordered, we total what the house already runs, from range and dryer to air handler, against the main breaker. If the amperage holds and only breaker spaces are gone, electrical panel installation in Fort Mill with a subpanel will do. If the service itself is the limit, here is what an upgrade delivers.

  • Fuses finally retired

Screw-in fuses in a house from Fort Mill's textile mill decades are swapped for a breaker panel with one main breaker that shuts off the whole house.

  • Stab-Lok and Zinsco removed

Stab-Lok panels from Federal Pacific, and Zinsco panels too, come out whole, so no one has to hunt for scarce replacement breakers to keep them in service.

  • July heat, own breakers

On a 90 degree Fort Mill July afternoon, a heat pump running hard sits on its own 240 volt breakers instead of crowding the main.

  • Charger ready, co-op or Duke

Every Level 2 charger lands on a dedicated circuit, and York Electric members have room for the separate submeter and 40 amp breaker its EV rate asks for.

  • Bonus rooms wired in advance

A finished room over a Springfield or Massey garage, or a planned sunroom, gets circuits laid out in the new panel now instead of squeezed in later.

  • New socket, not stretched

Duke Energy customers get a new 200 amp meter socket rather than an old base stretched with added blocks, which the utility's rules do not allow.

Fort Mill service changes: town or county, Duke or co-op

  • Jurisdiction field checked first

Town staff point to the Jurisdiction field in York County's GIS: if it reads FORT MILL, the town permits and inspects the service change. If not, the permit goes to York County.

  • A socket you own, mounted right

On Duke service the homeowner furnishes and owns the meter socket, so we supply it and mount it with the meter centerline 4 to 5.5 feet above final grade.

  • Co-op members, co-op steps

York Electric members follow the cooperative's own process for service changes, so we confirm the steps with York Electric Member Services before the disconnect is scheduled.

  • SC licensed for service work

The town lets homeowners permit only small maintenance jobs, so a service change goes to a South Carolina licensed electrician. Ours are licensed in South Carolina, and in North Carolina too, under #34773.

  • Warranty and financing offered

A Gastonia company since 1973, Roland Black stands behind Fort Mill upgrades with a 10-year warranty and offers financing. The office line, (980) 206-3523, never closes.

Fort Mill upgrade questions: meter base, jurisdiction, Duke

On Duke Energy service, usually yes when the amperage rises. Duke's requirements say a self-contained meter base may not be modified to increase its capacity, so the old socket is replaced rather than stretched. The homeowner furnishes and owns the socket, so we supply and mount it at the required height, while Duke sets the meter. York Electric members follow the co-op's own steps, which we confirm with Member Services.

York County does. The Town of Fort Mill lists electrical service changes or replacement as permitted work, but its permits cover only properties inside town limits, and a Fort Mill mailing address does not settle that. Enter the address in York County's GIS: a Jurisdiction field reading FORT MILL means the town; anything else means the county. We check this before quoting and file with whichever office applies.

As early as possible. Duke asks customers to update their service application when service changes or load is added, and we make that call while the quote is still fresh. Duke then sets the meter only after the town or York County reports that the inspection is approved. If York Electric serves the house instead, we go through its Member Services.
